"You are a miracle, Heidi--a true and invaluable gem." - Zahra Haji, yoga teacher, business owner, author
Editing & Manuscript Evaluation
Your writing is personal to you, a distillation and extension of your experience, yearnings, loves, sorrows, and wild imaginings. At its best, it is a living thing, a little like a baby you birthed, a little like a fairy you saw out of the corner of your eye and managed, improbably, to capture.
Then comes the editing.
Whether you've written a novel you plan to indie publish, a memoir for which you're seeking traditional representation, or the newsletter for a business that is the fulfillment of your highest calling, your wild and beautiful work needs taming, shaping, refining. Possibly rescuing.
I work from my heart centre and my third eye as well as from my brain...which is to say, I bring a compassionate and intuitive approach to the editing process, listening to the story and tuning in to what it's trying to become, always holding the author and her vision in highest respect. I bring some pretty good analytical skills to the table as well. I see myself as a sort of story midwife--someone warm and compassionate who can hold your hand, suggest the birthing pool or the hypnosis track, but who also has the training, the knowledge, and the big bag of equipment for the critical no-nonsense work. I especially enjoy working with emerging and indie authors.
I have a Specialized Honours BA in English from York University, where I graduated with the Glendon English prize and the Glendon Convocation Prize of Distinction. I studied publishing, copy editing, substantive and line editing in the Ryerson University Certificate in Publishing program. I've edited or critiqued novels, creative non-fiction books, essays and short stories. I've worked intimately with words and stories of my own for nearly 30 years. I've learned through practical experience--writing, revisioning, rewriting--how a story works and when it doesn't. I've been edited myself, and I know exactly how valuable it is to have an intelligent, invested person engaging deeply with your work, asking insightful questions, calling you out on those niggling loose ends you thought you might get away with.

"After going through and enacting nearly all of your editing changes, I realize now more than ever how good you are. Really. You are WONDERFUL. The manuscript is so much leaner now. I can't tell you all the times I just thrilled to your corrections. I can't tell you how I loved seeing my overwrought and superfluous text disappear. Does taking your advice ever improve a manuscript!" - Martin Zender, writer
